Call for student applications: The 10th Korea Arctic Academy Online Course (5 - 12 July); the deadline to apply is 21 June 2024 (best two students will be invited to visit South Korea)

UArctic and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) are pleased to announce an opportunity for students from UArctic member institutions to participate in the 10th Korea Arctic Academy online course together with students from Korean universities. The 10th Korea Arctic Academy will begin on 5 July and end on 12 July 2024. The course will include online lectures on Arctic issues and conduct real-time conferences (given by international and Korean experts from Arctic-related organisations and research institutions in Korea). Two best students of the course will be provided with travel grants to the 2024 Arctic Partnership Week in Busan in December 2024.

The Korea Arctic Academy, hosted by the Korean Ministry of Oceans & Fisheries and co-organized by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the University of the Arctic (UArctic), is an initiative to facilitate exchanges between students from both the Arctic region and Korea in order to develop and share a common Arctic vision. It aims to spread knowledge on sustainable Arctic development and ocean management and promote understanding of the Arctic indigenous peoples.

The Korea Maritime Institute serves as a Secretariat of the Academy. The programme of the Korea Arctic Academy usually consists of lectures on Arctic issues, given by international or Korean experts, and field trips to Arctic-related organizations, research institutions, and industrial sites in Korea.

About the online course (5 - 12 July 2024)

The course will include online lectures (and real-time conferences) on Arctic issues, given by international and Korean experts from Arctic-related organisations and research institutions in Korea.

  • Course completion requirements: Attending over the 80 % of online lectures, participating online conference at least once, completing student workshop, submitting a final paper
  • A reward: Travel grant to Korea for attending 2024 Arctic Partnership Week in December 2024 (2 outstanding students)
  • Credits: 2 ECTS
  • Additional note: All students who complete the course will receive a KAA Welcome Kit and a Certificate of Completion. Admitted students will receive further information on lectures and other practicalities later

Eligibility criteria

  • Accepted study levels: bachelor's / master's / doctoral (PhD) level students of Tampere University, however, the student should have finished or is finishing right now their second year of the bachelor's degree
  • The programme is open to students of all academic backgrounds
  • The student is motivated to actively participate and to enhance understanding of the Arctic and Korea
  • The student must have sufficient knowledge of English, both oral and written

    • A Europass template is recommended
  • a motivation letter in English (approx. 600 words/1 page)
