KASTE - Human centered methods as part of multifunctional machinery automation design

KASTE develops and applies methods which help companies in integrating activities promoting usability as part of their product development processes. The goal is to establish and develop good automation design practices that pay attention to all user groups. Particular attention is paid in strengthening multifuncional design culture and innovativeness in the companies. A central application field in the project is teleoperation in machinery and automation industry. See also UsabilityMate.

METHODS

The project applies case study and action research methods as a research strategy. Interviews, surveys and observations are used to collect data from and for the studies. The researchers participate also the practical design work inside the companies when it is appropriate.

Participating companies' capability in user centered design is evaluated through an informal usability maturity evaluation. The evaluation is based on ISO TR 18529 usability maturity model. The evaluation itself is defined in ISO 15504-2 and the evaluated processes were based on ISO 13407, which defines the processes and practices of user centered design in a high level.

The companies' usability maturity is developed by piloting and integrating the best suitable practices from usability field in to the organizations development processes. Several well known methods from the usability field are applied in case studies. The selection of these methods is presented in UsabilityMate. Most methods are applied as such, but particular attention has been paid to develop heuristics that support the design and evaluation in automation context better than the general ones.
