SharMe

SharMe project was a research cooperation project with Nokia Research Center, partly financed by Tekes, and lasting from 06/2006 to 03/2007. The study was based on an abstract concept developed by NRC. SharMe has produced one MSc Thesis and several other publications are "under construction".

Background

Archiving life moments has been a predominant user trend for several years. Hence, there is a need to study the overall concept of SharMe from the user perspective and to further develop the concept of context-aware capturing, storing, retrieving and sharing ones memories with a mobile phone.

Goals

The main objective of the project was to bring the end-users' perspective to the development of the SharMe concept. SharMe touches the very personal parts of people's lives - their memories - and thus it is especially crucial to understand the in-depth needs, fears and requirements of potential users of such system. Fluent and pleasant interaction with the system must be possible in the mobile and stationary usage contexts, in order to provide satisfying user experience to the diverse consumer groups.

The most concrete goal was to refine the initial concept in a direction that suits the users, and to create a prototype of the developed concept iteration to be evaluated with users.

Methods

To study the user needs, requirements and fears related to life memory management, a wide set of user-centered study methods was used. Firstly, single and pair interviews and focus group interviews were conducted to gain insight into the users' needs and attitudes. Then, an applied version of Contextual Design (Holtzblatt 2005: Rapid Contextual Design) was conducted to study the current usage patterns with personal content management systems. Based on the user study results, a mobile phone prototype of life memory management application was designed. Finally, the prototype - its user interface and ideology - was evaluated both with paper prototyping and with various interviewing methods and scenario roleplaying with the finalized concept application.
