Research

Focusing on User Experience

As the functionality of technology products and services becomes increasingly versatile, it is the delighting user experience that differentiates a succesful product from the competitors. Product development needs to broaden the focus from implementing features and testing their usability to understanding users' daily lives and evaluating if a product fulfills user needs, values and requirements.

The unit of Human-Centered Technology (IHTE) at the Tampere University of Technology (TUT) focuses on studying user experience and human-centered design of products and services. In addition, the unit develops methods for designing, implementing and evaluating technical systems from the users' perspective.

Research Areas

The research in user experience and human-centered design is multidisciplinary by its nature. In our research, we combine knowledge from technical and humanistic fields.

The research focuses on:

  • User experience, usability and user-driven innovation of technology products and services
  • User needs, values and requirements
  • Methods and theories for human-centered design

The main goal of the unit of Human-Centered Technology is to promote innovative development of human-centered technology of both professional and consumer products.

The application fields include:

  • Mobile, ubiquitous and home technologies
  • Internet (Web 2.0) services and communities
  • Work and business systems, for example machine automation

The research is conducted in cooperation with industry and other research units. Tekes (Finnish agency for technology and innovation) is the main financier in several projects.
