OHJ-3801/3806 Introduction to Software Engineering Research

Lectures

In 2011, the lectures will be given normally on Tuesdays at 10.15-12.00. However, special sessions are organized on 21.3, 22.3, and 23, broadcasted from the SoSE Saariselkä seminar, given by international experts. The times for these lectures are given separately. Attendance in the first setup session 8.3 is highly recommended. Lectures are given in the net without a physical location, so that students may attend the lectures from their workstations. Recordings and slides of the lectures are available from SoSE site.

Participating in the lectures

The lectures will be shared using Adobe Connect Pro, at https://connectpro.helsinki.fi/sose/. This is a web-based tool that requires no installation. You should first make a connection test to ensure that your computer and network connections are properly configured to be run with Adobe Connect Pro and to detect possible problems (e.g. firewall problems). The problems may be related to port settings, port 1935 should be opened at least outwards. If you have not earlier used the tool, the test detects a missing add-in and suggests its installation. This add-in is not necessarily needed in participating in the lectures, but to get all features in use, it should be installed.

Hardware

As hardware, you will need a microphone and loudspeakers; normally these are available in your laptop. The best choice is usually a head-set, including both earphone and microphone. Web camera can be used if you wish to be seen by other participants.

Using the tool

First, go to the location https://connectpro.helsinki.fi/sose/, type your name and enter the room. It might be good to first run "Audio Setup" wizard (can be found in the "Meeting" menu) to test microphone and loudspeakers. To put on your own camera and microphone, click the button on "Camera and Voice" window. Normally only the lecturer is expected to have a camera. It is reasonable to keep the microphone on only when you are speaking, otherwise the voice may echo. To put the microphone on and off, press the button looking like a lock (near "Talk" button). Another choice is to press "Talk" button all the time when you are speaking. For short questions to the lecturer, participants can use the chat provided by the tool.

More information can be found in Adobe Connect Pro help menu. "Quick Start" gives instructions to basic actions.
