Hämeenkatu

Hämeenkatu is today the main street of Tampere. There are many old buildings still left, although some of them have been either bombed badly in war or replaced by more modern buildings.

Although Hämeenkatu is today the main street through the city, it gained the position only when the bridge Hämeensilta was built. Before that the main street was Kauppakatu.

We start from the east end of Hämeenkatu, from the railway station. Facing west, we see on the left the hotel Hospitz Emmaus

To get to the center of the town, we have to cross the Tammerkoski river over Hämeensilta bridge. On the left side of the bridge there is the house of Sumelius, and on the right hand side is the theatre.

Having crossed the river, we arrive to the Central Square (Keskustori). From Keskustori, the street starts to rise uphill towards the Pyynikinharju ridge. The next picture was taken from Keskustori towards Pyynikinharju. The building on the right hand side corner is the Town Hall (Raatihuone) , and the building in the left corner is Commerce
