Travel Grants

Travel grants are available for the students of TISE. All TISE students are allowed to apply for travel grants. The applications for the year 2012 can be sent continuously to TISE secretary Marjo Elojoki (Tampere University of Technology, Department of Signal Processing, P.O. Box 553, 33101 Tampere). Applications must be submitted before the travel happens.

Grants can be used, for example, for scientific visits abroad or for participation in conferences, where the student has an accepted paper.

Maximum amounts for the grants are currently (in 2012)

Other areas are decided on a case by case basis.

The applicant is informed as soon as possible whether the application is accepted or rejected. The acceptance of the application may also depend on the economic situation of TISE (i.e., are there any funds left for the travel grants). The policy is to process the applications as they arrive - first come, first served.

If you apply the grant for a scientific visit, your free-format application shall contain all the information that we need to make the decision (when, where, why, etc.). The recommendation and statement of your supervisor shall also be attached. An invitation or a program of the visit would be nice. In this category, you shall give reasons for the usefulness of the visit.

For scientific visits, there is no quantitative limitation in the amount of grants in a year per student. Instead, the decision is based on the usefulness of the visit for the scientific career of the applicant. The decision also depends on the travel grants already granted for the student and on the funds left for the travel grants.

Besides grants for scientific visits, it is expected that one grant per student in a year can be awarded for a conference participation as a presenting author. If you apply the grant for a conference participation, please attach to your free-format application the following information

Regarding possibilities of grants for multiple conference trips, you can in any case apply for a higher grant for a later conference if you have already used a smaller grant for a conference participation. In this case, the difference is awarded for the later trip, provided that TISE's financial situation allows this.

Each year, a final call for travel grants during that year will be issued probably in late summer or early autumn. Depending on the economic situation of TISE, applications for additional conference trips may be considered at that stage.

In addition to the cases above, it is also possible to apply travel grants for participation in intensive courses and summer schools organized by the doctoral programmes in Figsit (the Network of Finnish Graduate Schools in Information Technology) or other related Finnish doctoral programmes. The need for such grant is evaluated case by case considering the following aspects

Active participation (presentation, poster, passing the course with credits, etc.) is a prerequisite for the grants in this category. The grants for the courses are at most 500 euro. It is expected that one such grant be provided for each interested student during 2012.

If you apply the grant for an aforementioned course participation, please attach to your free-format application the following information

The application and/or the recommendation shall give reasons for the usefulness of the course. Note that our funds are restricted and the selection will based on the criteria given above.

When using the TISE travel grants, the rules of the universities for traveling are applied.
