Instructions for Supervisors


The letter of recommendation from the supervisor must contain, in addition to a short free-format recommendation text, the following information.

  1. Realistic estimate of the dissertation date (month/year).
  2. An estimate of how much of the overall research work for the dissertation (excluding course work) is still to be done (from 0 to 100 %).
  3. Do you expect the thesis to be compound or monograph?
  4. Confirmation that the supervisor agrees with applicant's classification of publications into the following classes: (a) in refereed international journals, (b) in international conferences with review process, (c) other international, (d) other.
  5. Which of the applicant's publications are directly applicable in the thesis (you can use the numbering in the applicant's list of publications)?
  6. Confirmation that the supervisor is familiar and has accepted the research plan of the applicant (including its schedule and possible financing plan).
  7. An estimate of how many hours in a month on the average you intend to use on the supervision of the applicant.
  8. Besides you as the formal supervisor, has the applicant other supervisors and what is their role and contribution?
  9. If the applicant applies for a TISE position without funding, please describe briefly how the applicant's studies are going to be financed and an estimate how much of his/her work time the applicant can use to his/her post-graduate studies (from 0 to 100 %).
  10. A short description how the research is related to the research areas in TISE (see http://www.cs.tut.fi/tise/description.html) if the connection is not evident due to the research plan.

You can write the letter of recommendation either in Finnish or in English. You can send the letter of recommendation directly to the coordinator of TISE, Pertti Koivisto (e-mail forename.surname@tut.fi, mailing address below), or it can be attached to the application. In case the letter of recommendation is attached to the application, you can yet send additional comments directly to the coordinator of TISE.
