The task of the initialization process is to maximize the throughput
and reliability of the link. This process is also transparent to the
vendors choice of the method of separating upstream and downstream
signals (either FDM or echo cancellation). See also section

The channel attribute values determined by the initialization
procedure include the number of bits and relative power levels to be
used on each DMT sub-carrier, as well as any messages and final data
rates information. Table describes the main
stages of the initialization procedure.
