Nearly 13,000 students study at TUT and approximately 2,000 people work in teaching, research and support service
positions. In terms of student numbers, TUT is the second largest university of technology in Finland.
TUT’s core competence lies with basic research in technology, which provides a strong foundation for applied research and
innovative product development. The University’s expertise is further strengthened through close collaboration with companies,
other universities and research institutes.
Founded in 1965, the University has grown to hold significant influence in the field of technology and as a major promoter
of business and social well-being in Finland. The university is owned by the state, like all universities in Finland. It is
internally self-governing, though subordinated to the Ministry of Education.
TUT consists of 5 faculties with 14 degree programmes and about 21 academic units. The educational programmes include both
traditional and new fields of modern technology. All courses meet high academic standards and give a comprehensive view of
each discipline.
International orientation is central in the activities of TUT, in both research and education, and the university has
cooperation partners in these activities around the world.
