AARHUS
With a population of more than 300,000, Aarhus
(Tourist Office and
City info) is the second
largest city in Denmark, beautifully located between the sea, forests, and
hills, on the eastern coast of Jutland, 300 km from Copenhagen
(Denmark map). Being the
cultural centre of Jutland, Aarhus is termed as an active city displaying
Denmark's best music and entertainment scenes. One of the most visited places
in Aarhus is Den Gamle By
(The Old Town), which is an
open-air museum that houses 75 restored buildings.
Aarhus is at heart Denmark's youngest city, because every fifth, or
thereabouts, of its inhabitants is a student at one of the city's 25
educational and research institutions. At
Aarhus University, where
the workshop takes place, there are nearly 35,000 students. The
characteristic yellow-brick buildings of the university are an architectural
gem in the beautiful University Park which now almost extends into the Old
Town centre. The city and the university form a unique symbiosis which has a
special attraction on students and lecturers from all over the world.
Aarhus is also a city with clearly visible roots, founded, as it was, by the
Vikings in the 8th century. The Vikings settled by the mouth of the river -
at the very spot where the Cathedral today rises into the sky with its tower
soaring to more than 90 metres in height.
The Bispetorv square was also the centre of the town 1250 years ago, and
is known today as the Vadestedet with its cafe-culture and outdoor
life during the summertime.
You can fly either to
Aarhus airport,
Billund airport, or
Kastrup airport in Copenhagen.
There are buses from Aarhus airport to Aarhus
(Aarhus airport bus). The
bus trip takes about 1 hour and costs 90 DKK.
There are buses from Billund airport to Aarhus
(Billund
airport bus). The
bus trip takes about 1.5 hours and costs 180 DKK.
There are direct trains and trains with one change from the Kastrup
airport in Copenhagen to Aarhus Station. Direct trains leave every hour at
#:40 minutes from 4:40 in the morning until 21:40 in the night.
There are also trains outside these times. The train trip takes about 3.5
hours. A one-way ticket costs 325 DKK, a round trip double. See
train schedule for
more information.
