General notes and requirements

The assignment must be done individually or in groups of 2 students.

The language of reports is English.

Follow the instructions given in the assignment and answer all the questions.

Your report must contain your name, student number, and e-mail.

Bring your printed reports to Dmitri Moltchanov’s office (TH216) or leave them under the door.

The deadline is June 01, 2011.

How to run OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Operating systems:
Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3, 5, or 6a; Service Packs 4 and 6 are not supported)
Windows 2000 (Service Packs 1, 2, and 4 are supported but not required)
Windows XP (Service Pack 1 or 2 is required)
Windows Vista
Windows 7

Memory:
256MB required

Disk space:
200MB required (additional 200MB required during installation)
A minimum 20MB of additional disk space is also recommended to store model files created during labs and tutorials.

Display:
1024x768 or higher resolution

REGISTRATION

If your computer meets the system requirements, shown above, please visit the following site and register to download the OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition software:

Click the “Register and Download” link and you will be redirected to the Academic Edition Account Signup page. Fill out the registration form. After you click “Submit” to register, a username and password will be emailed to you along with the link to the OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition download page. Save your username and password because you will need them to access important information on OPNET's web site, including the OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition download page.

DOWNLOAD & INSTALLATION

Download the software from here (about 190MB):

After you have downloaded the installer, simply run the executable and follow the instructions to install the software. Note that you must be logged in with Administrator privileges to install the software.

ACTIVATION

When you run IT Guru Academic Edition for the first time, its license needs to be activated. By following the given step by step instructions you should be able to successfully complete the activation process:

IT GURU ACADEMIC EDITION LIMITATIONS

- limited built-in ACE module capabilities (only a fixed set of application traces)
- limited import and export capabilities
- other product modules are not supported
- limited wireless functionality
- the maximum number of simulation events is limited to 50 million
- the maximum number of nodes with 2 or more connections (like switches, routers, etc.) is limited to 20

IMPORTANT NOTES

Language settings

IT Guru Academic Edition does not work with number representation different from English. The reason is the different decimal separator: point in English, comma practically in all others. Therefore, you should select English number representation:

Start => Control Panel => Regional and Language Options => Standards and formats => English (United States)

Working with graphs

To take a screenshot, do the following:

- press Ctrl-Shift-T to invoke the IT Guru screen capture utility;
- select the generated graph or, if required, any part of the screen (including graphs, opened windows, etc.);
- save the screenshot as a GIF image;
- insert the image file into your report (e.g., in Microsoft Office Word: Insert => Picture => From File...).
