Teaching Statement by Yevgeni Koucheryavy
Yevgeni has valuable experience in inviting lecturing for vendors, telcos and universities since the year 1997.
Since spring 2001 he is carrying regular teaching load at Institute of Communications Engineering, TUT. The following courses are given
Yevgeni holds the teaching strategy based on four cornerstones – classes, homeworks, laboratories, and practical assignments. Classes give very good opportunity to feel level of knowledge, understanding, and students’ appetite to learn. Homeworks represent self-study component of a course; normally deadline for report is around 2 weeks from each homework announcement date. Each of homework is dedicated to a certain area of knowledge. Usually homework contains several problems/tasks, and related class material contains hints – this strategy assures that a student would stay in touch with course materials. Laboratory session represents three hours of practical exercises at the networking class. There are two basic types of laboratory session, the first one requires to fill a prestudy form preliminarily and then to complete assigned task at the class; the second one presumes obtaining of results in the class and producing of report in 1 or 2 weeks afterwards. Usually the first type of laboratory session aims at building specific network topologies under certain circumstances, while the second one deals with analysis of specific protocols within a given network environment. Practical assignments are mainly focused on simulation tools – students are provided with software tool and tasks to complete. On a base of obtained results it is required to prepare report within 1 or 2 weeks. For simulation studies students use the following packages: NS2, SDT, OPNET and IT Guru.
Teaching development
Yevgeni carries teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The courses mentioned above are structured in a way that a student could obtain very strong networking knowledge in 3 – 4 semesters (1.5 – 2 years). Yevgeni also update courses in order to reflect rapid changes in the field. New courses are constantly under consideration and development, so-called ad hoc style could be applied for some hot topics; a new short course can be established in a fast way. This will keep student updated on recent advances. A course based on invited presentations delivered by experts from industry or other universities could also be beneficial to students.
Teaching materials
Yevgeni uses relatively broad types of materials for his lectures, starting with textbooks up to standards.
